The now over half a century old event of Earth Day was officially celebrated earlier this week but that doesn’t mean that local people in the Northwest looking to make a difference and help clean up the planet can’t do so.
The City of Terrace allowed people to drop off their yard waste at the public works department on April 22nd and are letting people do that again in celebration of Earth Day this Saturday from 8:30 AM until 4 PM.
But the day after that one is when a more prominent cleaning related event will be taking place in the Garbathon Community Clean-Up that will be based out of George Little Park and will last from 12 PM until 4 PM.
The event, which also happens to be entering it’s 40th year, is being put on by the Greater Terrace Beautification Society with some help from the likes of SkeenaWild, the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine as well as the City of Terrace itself with the tools needed to efficiently do the pick up work being provided by the organizers as they hope to surpass the large amount of trash that they collected last year.
The collection area is not contained to George Little Park as residents can go wherever they please to pick up garbage and then bring it back to the park and then give it to the organizers with all participants getting a gift certificate relating to one of the event’s sponsors and being entered into a draw to potentially win a prize.
Volunteers will also be going to clean up the local riverbanks at 9 AM that same day after also meeting at George Little Park so residents are welcome to join that as well and more information about the event can be found on the Garbathon 2025 Facebook Event Page.
