A longtime and beloved mayor in the northwest has died.
Alice Maitland was first elected to Hazelton council in 1965. In 1976 she became the mayor of Hazelton - and remained in that position until 2018, a remarkable 42-years - making her the longest serving mayor in BC history.
MP Taylor Bachrach described Maitland as a renowned champion for rural communities, having herself grown up in Hazelton.
Terrace Mayor Sean Bujtas described Maitland as a friend and fierce voice for the Hazeltons.
And Smithers Mayor Gladys Atrill stated that Maitland’s commitment to her community, region, and supporting women in government - along with her family - will be her legacy.
Maitland was 91 years old. Her daughter Julie Maitland now serves as mayor of Hazelton.
