Plans for a 2-hundred thousand BPD bitumen-to-fuels refinery located between Terrace and Kitimat have been scrapped.
The proposed facility would have used hydrocracking to process heavy oil, and would have been powered by a 200-megawatt gas-powered power plant.
The facility was proposed to refine cost-advantaged feedstock into euro V-standard fuels and would use carbon captures and storage to minimize CO2 emission.
The Pacific Futures Energy Corporation had applied for environmental permitting and the environmental impact assessment was underway.
The Minister of Environment and Climate Change has now terminated the environmental assessment for the Pacific Future Energy Refinery Project.
The government stated that on December 3rd, 2024, the Pacific Future Energy Corporation notified the impact assessment agency of Canada that they no longer intended to carry out the project.
